It received over 100,000 upvotes on Reddit
Two cats from Onomichi have taken the internet by storm. An adorable video of two cats trying to enter the Onomichi City Museum of Art has amassed over 100,000 upvotes on Reddit. It shows several security guards tasked with keeping the cute felines from getting into the museum, an occurrence that has been happening for the past two years.
If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look at the great video showcasing the two cats:
Hilariously, the cats have become embraced by the museum, as they even sell merchandise with them. One bag features an oversized version of the cat getting stuck in the entrance while a security guard denies him entry. Reddit user Metron_Seijin even guesses that they don’t want entry to the art museum, but rather just ‘’want some pets from that nice security guy. If pretending they want inside gets them the pets, then that's what they will do.’’
Those that played Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will remember Onomichi well, as it serves as one of the game’s primary locations. The quiet Japanese boat town is well known for its stray cats that adorn the streets and shrines. In fact, the travel blog DigiJapan called it the ‘’city of cats!’’ According to Setouchi Finder, there is even a narrow lane called Neko no Hosomichi, which translates to ‘’Cat Alley,’’ that is famous for how many cats appear. The city itself uses its feline population as a selling point, as they famously put out a ‘’Cat Street View’’ website that allows for people to see the area from a cat’s perspective.

It’s only fitting that cats also play a large role in Yakuza 6. One of the main side quests in the action game is helping a cat cafe owner out by befriending stray cats. Kiryu, Yakuza’s main protagonist, can give cats different types of food in order to gain their trust, and then he can take the furry felines to their new home. It’s a fun way to embrace Japanese culture, while also giving players a reason to explore its virtual version of Onomichi.
It just goes to show how incredible Yakuza’s recreation of Onomichi is. Not only did it successfully recreate the vibe of the lovely Japanese city, but it also brought its stray cats with it. You never know what you might learn from video games!
