Angry Birds Developer Rovio Purchases Finnish Studio PlayRaven
They plan on expanding into mobile strategy games
Angry Birds developer Rovio Entertainment are looking to expand their selection of mobile games. The Finnish developer is looking to expand into strategy titles, and will do so by acquiring another finnish game studio, PlayRaven, for an undisclosed amount. The first strategy game they make won’t have anything to do with the Angry Birds series, and will instead be its own intellectual property.
Rovio’s Mikko Setala told Reuters that the PlayRaven acquisition made sense for the company since they already have the skills in place to make top-notch strategy games. Setala says that it would have taken Rovio several years for their own employees to make a strategy game at that level, but PlayRaven already has the necessary experience.
PlayRaven was established just five years ago, but they’ve released several mobile games. Their past titles include EVE: War of Ascension, Project Metro, Robocide, Spymaster, and Winterstate. They’re located in Finland, and currently have 25 employees.
Details on Rovio’s upcoming strategy game with PlayRaven remain sparse, but more news can be expected in the upcoming year.
