Marvel’s Spider-Man Full Walkthrough: Clearing the Way
The first storyline mission will introduce players to the basics of getting around the city and local battles
After choosing the difficulty level (you can read about it in detail in a separate article) and watching the introductory video, the control over Spider-Man is handed over to the player. Let’s start with the basics of moving around the city using web strings – the main way of exploring New York in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
It is not difficult to control the hero in air: when you press R2, the hero clings to the nearest object (a building, a lamp post or a tree) and hangs on it until you release the button. If you do it in the highest point of the swing, you’ll be able to gain altitude. If you do it in the middle point of the swing, you’ll add speed to your movement.
You can pull yourself up (‘’X’’ button) on a web in the air to maintain altitude, turn swiftly or move quickly over a short distance. The latter feature is most effective during pursuit and in certain side tasks.
The superhero’s help is needed on Times Square – the people of Wilson Fisk, the New York’s crime overlord, blocked the entrances to the square and interfered with law enforcement officers. After you have arrived at the site (just follow the yellow icon), you’ll meet a group of aggressive bandits and won’t be able to avoid a fight.
Spider-Man can use a light strike (the ‘’■’’ button on the PS4 gamepad) which, when used sequentially, turns into combinations. At this point, they are of no use, so just avoid enemy fists and bullets. When you press the light strike button close to the opponent, the hero will throw the enemy into the air. Press ‘’■’’ again to jump to the opponent and continue the beating. Use this method when you are surrounded by enemies.
Another type of the hit is the Web Strike (‘’▲’’ button) which is used to quickly reduce the distance between Spider-Man and a specific enemy. This attack allows you to quickly knock out the stunned opponent and to deal with a distant shooter.
You can also find interactive objects (manholes, mailboxes) across the arena. If you see such an object and simultaneously press L1 and R1, the hero will pull the object by using his web, spin it around and throw at the enemy marked by a white contour.
Be careful: during the animation of the throw, Spider-Man remains vulnerable, so use this tactic only when you are sure of your safety. Otherwise, the throw will result in damage to your character.Besides the web and his own fists, Spider-Man has self-made gadgets. Only one gadget is available in the introductory mission – Web Shooters (R1), but even this tool is indispensable on the battlefields of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
This device can not only temporarily immobilize the enemies and deprive them of the opportunity to hurt you, but it can also neutralize them permanently. For this, two conditions must be met:
- The enemy is close to the wall or lies on the ground. In the other case, the thug will be simply covered with cobweb and will be able to escape it in a couple of seconds.
- You have enough charges in the ejector. The ‘’ammunition’’ is restored automatically over time, and later the ‘’charger’’ can be increased.
In this regard, the optimal tactic of dealing with ordinary enemies at this stage is the following: deal several blows to the enemy so that he falls or is thrown to the wall, add four-five web strikes for final neutralization. Repeat until victory.
The last important element of local battles that players learn in the first mission is Spider Sense. This feature warns the hero about the incoming danger. The alarm comes in the form of icons flashing around the character’s head.
When you see this ‘’notice’’, evade immediately (‘’■’’ button) or you’ll get hit by the nearby thug or even catch a bullet. The gun shot does a lot of damage in Marvel’s Spider-man so dodge a bullet if you can.
Unlike Batman Arkham series games with a similar combat system, the timely pressing on the evasion button in Marvel’s Spider-Man does not lead to an immediate neutralization of the opponent. Instead, the character will only avoid damage, which, in turn, opens additional tactical possibilities. We will talk about them in the following chapters.
Having dealt with Fisk’s thugs, Spider-man will head to his tower which is (unsuccessfully) assaulted by the police. The superhero promises to clear the way for the cops and rushes toward the next storyline mission.
