PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an MMO Battle Royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation, which is a subsidiary of a Korean publisher Bluehole.
Much like many MMO shooters, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds doesn’t follow a storyline but rather focuses on gameplay. As for the setting, a hundred players are transported to a remote island where they must scavenge for guns, armor and other equipment while killing other players to keep themselves alive for as long as they can. To win the game, a player needs to be the last player or team standing on the island.
PUBG is a Battle Royale game which is a blend of survival, exploration and scavenging elements. The gameplay of PUBG is simple. Players are transported on an island and they have to kill each other until only one player or team remains. The basic concept behind the game is as simple as it gets, kill or be killed.
Players will be making their way through a massive map, going from deserted buildings to buildings to find useful weapons, armor, ammo, consumables along with anything else that can raise their chances to survive. Players will be running or driving through the streets for the majority of the game with highly intense shootouts with other players. Most fights are short but extremely reliant on players’ skill. By the end of a match, two people in a short area battle for victory.
The tension doesn’t ease when running around since you can hear gunshots in the distance, so you know where you should head if you’re looking for a fight. To keep players moving, the island is enclosed in a shrinking dome of death that starts to shrink after short intervals. Any player that leaves the dome takes damage until they make their way back in or end up dying, which helps to keep players moving rather than sitting in a single place for too long.
When PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was released, the game received generally high reviews from players and critics due to its unique and fresh gameplay that ushered the Battle Royale game mode into the mainstream. PUBG was initially developed as a mod for an existing popular mod Arma 3 before branching to become a standalone game.
Besides being critically acclaimed, PUBG has the biggest number of concurrent players logging in every day, ahead of both Dota 2 and GTA V on Steam. Since its release, players have constantly complained about rampant cheats. This has resulted in an increase of negative reviews on Steam. Since PUBG became a massive hit, many games that copy its Battle Royale mode have popped up, for example, Fortnite, which is a free-to-play game.
